Breaking new ground: Women’s rise in mining

From tracking property boundaries to mapping subsidence, spatial data is everywhere – and it’s changing fast. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) help us make sense of that data, offering powerful tools for visualisation, analysis, and decision-making. Having the right tools is essential to get the most out of any spatial dataset, and this comes in the form of GIS software such as QGIS, ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, or MapInfo.
As datasets evolve and software platforms get more sophisticated, it’s easy to fall behind. However, it is crucial to stay ahead of the curve to ensure GIS can support effective management. Whether you're a seasoned GIS user or just getting started, read on to discover what’s changing in the world of GIS and how Atlantech is helping clients stay ahead.
The earth moves, and so should your data
As data standards shift, it is important to adequately maintain databases to ensure visualisations are accurate.
For instance, projection standards are susceptible to change. At present, the referenced datum is GDA2020, which is based on current landforms that have changed since the previously implemented standard, GDA94. Due to tectonic shift, subsidence, and other improvements in the global reference frame, the difference between GDA2020 and GDA94 can range between less than 10 centimetres and greater than 1 metre. This difference can significantly offset some spatial datasets, creating minor impacts, such as identifying property boundaries, through to major impacts, such as mapping subsidence.
Unless reprojected to suit the current model, old datasets can display incorrectly and cause a variety of issues. In some cases, this can result in significant time spent managing and updating data to certify its accuracy.
A new era in GIS software
Software faces continuous improvement in every sector, and the tools we use to manage spatial data are also transforming.
Recently, ESRI announced it will phase out its ArcGIS Desktop platform, with updates, patches, and technical support ending in March 2026. While this will be a loss for many, ESRI’s new flagship platform, ArcGIS Pro, offers much simpler data analysis for users and boosts performance and efficiency in nearly every way. ArcGIS Pro can complete substantially more complex data processing, adding endless possibilities to spatial outputs. Although ArcGIS Desktop is still supported, you shouldn’t wait until it is no longer supported to make the change and improve your capabilities.
How Atlantech helps you stay current
Atlantech has already transitioned to ArcGIS Pro, and we have been using it to manage spatial data for our clients. From onboarding and training to migrating entire projects, we’ve been working closely with clients to make sure their systems and datasets are ready for what’s next. Along the way, we’ve also improved how spatial data is visualised and used to support better management decisions.
We offer ongoing support to maintain platforms and databases, ensuring your data continues to perform, scale, and deliver real value.
